The Ocean is a Friend of Mine

I'm not doing art for school and I don't often get around to doing it for fun. But I've started doing photo commissions as gifts for special friends, when there's a picture I really like with sentimental value. This is a painting I did for my sister of my niece Kimberly.

This is the original photo

I drew the picture, put up some preliminary beige sand stuff.

Forgot to take more progression photos, But I colored in Kimberly, put masking fluid over the foamy/white areas of the picture. I was nervous about starting the ocean because I've never painted one before. I also wasn't sure about how to show perspective and distance in the oncoming wave, so I did a layer of sandy color in the shallow portion of the oncoming wave.

Tossed together some colors, tried to blend some colors. Impressions in the sand, evening out the darker part of the ocean.

David's selfie interruption.

Not only did David take a selfie, he also took one look and said. "You need more detail in the sand." Such a gentleman.

Aaaaand, we're done. Full color scan and crop.

All in all, not so bad.
